Humans of Flintham
Heavily inspired by Humans of New York I wanted to showcase some of the quirkier members of the Flintham Ploughing Match. My favourite part of photography is the unstructured moments that have me rushing for a decent setting, losing my lens cap and catching something truly special. These are a few of the subjects that I'm in a position to post and tiny part of the story that makes up their lives.
“No offence to the young lady with you, but the owl is a good companion, it’s a lot cheaper than a lady, always around and it never answers back.”
He had a bunch of people moving past the competition bulls and making sure he was ready. When I asked for his photo, he asked me to wait and came back with the bull.
“I’ve always wanted to do this, I’ve known his grandmother, his mother and now there’s him. It’s been a very successful bloodline.”
“I finished 2 tours of Afghanistan, a tour of Iraq and I lost my leg. Now I breed turkeys and educate kids, it keeps my mind off of things.”
“I believe we shouldn’t forget the First World War, I’ve always been fascinated by the history of it – not just the fighting. Make sure to get the flag in.”
“Which vehicle here is your favourite?”
“This old thing is a Goulash Kannon. It was used by the Germans and captured by the British in 1916, they used it for the rest of the war. Took two horses to pull but it served hot food up and down the front. We're making soup at the moment, you should come back later, and I promise I won't give you food poisoning.”
He asked me if I’d like to see something that’s special to him and then rummaged around an old trailer for a bit. After a while he dug out a briefcase which turned out to be a record player, he wound it up and music started playing.
“We'll have dancing lessons later too I think.”
“How long have you guys been breeding dogs?”
“I think it’s been about what … 7 years now.”
“How many of them is there?”
“19 today I think, you should come by the showground later, we'll have all of them out and the hunter will be leading them around.”
